What Is AEO?

By Sam Wudel··8 min read

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — the practice of optimizing a business so AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI recommend it by name. This guide covers what AEO is, why it matters, and how it works.

AEO in one sentence

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the process of making a business visible and citable to AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, and Claude — so that when a user asks a question, the AI recommends that business by name.

Unlike traditional SEO, which targets search engine result pages, AEO targets the AI-generated answers that increasingly replace those pages. A business optimized for AEO does not just appear in a list of links — it becomes the answer.

Why AEO matters now

AI-referred sessions grew 527 percent between January and May 2025, according to SparkToro. Google AI Overviews now reach 1.5 billion users per month across 200-plus countries. ChatGPT has over 900 million weekly active users. Perplexity processes over 500 million monthly queries.

Gartner projects that traditional search traffic will drop 50 percent by 2028. The businesses that adapt to AI-first discovery now will own their markets. The ones that wait will lose visibility they may never recover.

AI traffic converts at 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic search traffic. When an AI assistant names a business as the answer, the user trusts that recommendation in a way they never trusted a list of ten blue links.

How AEO works

AI assistants build answers by synthesizing information from multiple sources: websites, directories, social platforms, forums, reviews, and structured data. AEO works by ensuring a business sends clear, consistent, verifiable signals across all of these sources.

The process involves five core areas. First, AI citability — structuring website content in direct-answer blocks that AI can extract and quote. Second, brand authority — building mentions across directories, social platforms, and review sites that AI trusts. Third, content E-E-A-T — demonstrating experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness through author credentials, methodology documentation, and original data. Fourth, technical GEO — configuring robots.txt, llms.txt, schema markup, and page speed so AI crawlers can access and understand the site. Fifth, structured data — deploying JSON-LD markup that tells AI exactly what the business is, who runs it, and what it offers.

AEO vs SEO: the key difference

SEO optimizes for rankings on a search results page. AEO optimizes for inclusion in an AI-generated answer. SEO gets a business a link. AEO gets a business named as the recommendation.

The two disciplines share some foundations — fast sites, structured data, and quality content help both. But AEO requires signals that SEO traditionally ignores: third-party brand mentions on Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn; llms.txt files; AI crawler access configuration; and content structured in passages that AI can quote verbatim.

A business with strong SEO but no AEO optimization is increasingly invisible. When 50 percent of search queries return an AI answer before showing any links, ranking number one on the results page behind that answer means fewer clicks than it used to.

What an AEO audit measures

An AEO audit scores how visible a business is to AI platforms. At Iris Digital Consulting, we run 18 prompts across six AI platforms and score the business out of 100 across five pillars: AI Citability, Brand Authority, Content E-E-A-T, Technical GEO, and Schema and Data.

The audit identifies which AI platforms are citing competitors instead of the client, and why. It produces a prioritized action plan that ranks fixes by impact — from quick wins that move the score in days to strategic plays that build compounding authority over months.

How to get started with AEO

Start with an audit. Without a baseline score, optimization is guesswork. A proper AEO audit tests real prompts on real AI platforms and tells you exactly where you stand relative to competitors in your market.

After the audit, prioritize technical fixes first — schema markup, AI crawler access, and llms.txt — because they are the fastest to implement and create the foundation everything else builds on. Then move to content optimization and brand authority building, which compound over time.

Most businesses see measurable improvement in AI citations within 60 days of starting optimization. Full results typically appear within 90 days as AI platforms re-index updated content and begin recognizing new authority signals.

What are the five pillars of AEO?
The five pillars are AI citability, brand authority, content E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness), technical GEO (robots.txt, llms.txt, schema, page speed), and structured data (JSON-LD markup).
